802.11 Wireless network @ IST

Configuration changes in the "eduroam" network (March 6, 2012)

Today, 6 March 2012, all IST users will have to update their wireless configuration. Click here.

This change, required by FCCN (the institution in charge of the Portuguese national research network) in coordination with international organizations, aims to improve security and compatibility of "eduroam" networks world wide. At IST, this update will be synchronized with a change of the IST root certificate (CA).

In some devices, the update will be almost seamless and suggested by the operating system. However, in most cases, a full reconfiguration will be required. Please follow the configurations instruction available at http://wifi.ist.utl.pt/configuracoes/. Please note, that due to technical constraints, this configuration update can not be made in advance and will be only effective if performed after the target change date.

We appologize for any inconvenience.

Important information about IST wireless access for visitors is available here.

Wireless access, authentication and configuration

Full acess to the internet requires 802.1X authentication. If you are a student or teacher at IST the authentication is performed using the Central Authentication Service username and password (Fenix credentials).

Instructions for 802.1X configuration and authentication can be found in this page.

Coverage (September 2007)

The wireless network is available in almost all areas of IST, at both the Alameda and Tagus Park campuses on the eduroam SSID.

Requests for improving coverage in specific areas must be sent by mail to wifi-cobertura@ist.utl.pt, with a clear specification of the precise location and access problems experienced (no signal at all / weak signal / signal without connection).
